מכירת חמץ– The SALE OF CHAMETZ
(unleavened food, by-products and utensils)
The Torah prohibits the consumption and ownership of Chametz on Passover. Many of us have Chametz supplies and utensils that we wish to use after the Passover holiday. All Chametz not destroyed, or given away must be sold to a non-Jew (to whom the laws of Passover do not apply). A Rabbi is usually appointed as an agent of the seller of the Chametz, to sell it to a non-Jew.
Not only does one sell Chametz in his/her possession, but also subleases to the non-Jew the property upon which the Chametz is located. Being that this sale is legal and should be taken seriously, the non-Jew is allowed free access to the Chametz that he purchases.
This procedure is a true sale in accordance to Talmudic and Secular law.
In order to allow the Rabbi time to complete the arrangements with the gentile at the conclusion of Passover, all sold Chametz may only begin to be used after 9:30 P.M. EDT on Wednesday April 18th, 2017.
When selling your Chametz, there is a custom to give a contribution for the sale and repurchase of the Chametz.
